about

Debut release from Brisbane Double Bass duo Antikythera Mechanism (Oliver King & Max Fowler-Roy).

The following notes were prepared by them about the album:

The Night Hag is a composition by Oliver King. This work is a series of gestural phrases that represent the sleep paralysis experience, the title of the work referencing a sleep paralysis 'demon' that has been witnessed by many sufferers throughout history. Delos - this work is named after a historical site in Greece, where Xenakis' work Oresteia was first performed on his return to Greece, after a 30 year exile. Delos is sparse and barren, and has been abandoned since the 6th century AD. However, it has been a sacred site for millennia, and is the birthplace of Apollo in Greek Mythology. Automata was developed from a simple rhythmic modulation concept where both basses play polyrhythmically against each other, abruptly shifting the rhythmic and harmonic relationships at indeterminate points. This work becomes “self-willed”, which is the meaning of the Greek root of the word Automata. Physis is derived from the Greek word for nature. This work was recorded in a nature reserve and features a reductionist-approach to double bass improvisation. The work was performed with the double basses laying on their backs, allowing for a different physical performance approach. The natural indeterminate sounds occurring throughout the performance of the work are considered a product of the music, just as much so as the sounds produced by the double basses. Glacial Tertius is a work emphasising droning long-bow tones, along with dynamic and sonoristic changes over long durations. The work is based off of a simple X-Y line graph depicting information pertaining to dynamics, timbre, pitch and intensities. Performed in a storm water drain, the recording encompasses the natural reverberation of the architectural structure through consideration taken towards the placement of microphones at different distances from the sounding double basses.
